How to set up and use MFA

Last updated: January 11, 2023

MFA (Multi Factor Authentication) is an extra security layer for logging into our cloud. This page explains how to set this up and how signing in with MFA works.

Step 1: install the Microsoft Authenticator app

Have you already installed the Microsoft Authenticator app on your phone? Then proceed to step 2. If you don’t have the app yet, install it on your phone first.

You install the Microsoft Authenticator app for Android through the Play Store and for iOS (iPhone) through the App Store. After installation, open the app and log in with the CE-iT account, with which you also sign in to our cloud.

Stap 2: set-up MFA

Method 1

To set up MFA follow the following link to your CE-iT account at Microsoft: https://aka.ms/mfasetup. You sign in with the same credentials as on our cloud.

If you have not yet entered a telephone number here, this will be requested as the first step. That is the backup for the MFA and the next step is to add the Authenticator app. Click on “Set up Authenticator app”.

You will now get a pop-up with a QR code. Scan the QR code with the Authenticator app, and you will be guided through the final steps. After completing the verification via the Authenticator app, the setup is complete.

Method 2

Go to https://portal.office.com/ and sign in with the same CE-iT account that you use for our cloud. If this doesn’t work, open a privat window of your browser.

Ga to View account.

Go to Security info.

Click Add method and select Authenticator app.

Follow the steps on the page and scan the QR code with the Authenticator app. If this doesn’t work, you can try a private window. You open a private window in your browser with the key combination ctrl + shift + n (Windows) or command + shift + n (macOS).

Step 3: set the Authenticator app as default

The last step is to set the Authenticator app as the default verification method. To do this, go back to the page from method 2 where you also added the Authenticator app as a verification method.

On the Security info page, click Change and select Microsoft Authenticator.

You now have set up MFA for logging into our cloud.

Signing in with MFA

Once you have set up MFA, it will work automatically. When signing in to our cloud, you go through the following steps:

  1. You enter your regular password.
  2. If the correct password has been entered, the Authenticator app will notify you on your phone. You unlock the phone and approve the notification within the app.
  3. You are now signed in to the cloud.
